From Burnout to Breakthrough: Finding Renewal in Challenging Times

After going through my second consecutive layoff, I felt burnt-out, frustrated, and depressed. While circumstance certainly played a role in both of my layoffs, it was hard not to take it personally. Why was I part of the unlucky cohort who were deemed expendable?

The truth is, I was deeply unhappy, and the layoff was a blessing in disguise, although it felt more like a gut punch at the time. I wasn’t sure what to do next and the thought of starting another job search filled me with angst. In fact, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to continue as a marketer.

I decided a career break could help me gain clarity, reinvigorate my enthusiasm for work, and restore my mental health. So, I bought a one-way ticket to Bogotá with the idea of taking some time to figure out my next step while pursuing a long-dormant desire to learn Spanish.

I explored a lot of different ideas — taco tours of LA, anyone? How about alpaca wool importer?

Ultimately, I decided that I had too much to offer to abandon my marketing career. I didn’t need a new profession, what I needed was a new approach. What I needed was to be better.

This realization was the impetus for a lot of changes that I started to make in my life. Initially, my aim with starting this blog was to raise my professional profile and position myself as a thought leader in the field of product marketing. However, I didn’t feel accomplished enough to present myself authentically as an authority on the topic.

Instead, my goal is to take you, the reader, along with me on this journey of self-improvement as I explore themes relating to personal and professional development, with a product marketing slant.

I hope that my words can inspire you to cultivate your own potential and that by sharing these lessons I can mature into a better version of myself.

Thank you for being here and I am excited to be on this mission with you. Now let’s get started!
